Public Works Director Greg Tate

A Word from Public Works Director Greg Tate.

Public Works employees consist of the biggest department in Red Bank. We aim to effectively maintain and develop public infrastructure and facilities, along with this we take a proactive approach to preserve and enhance the city for future generations.

In recent months, we have achieved some very significant projects that impact our citizens daily. Kids Corner Park has received some of the biggest improvements, new fencing around pickleball/tennis courts, resurfacing of tennis courts, updating the bathrooms, along with a new gazebo at our playground. The Boxing Building also saw an upgrade to the HVAC units that were over 30 years old.

12 New AED’s in all public facilities, along with automatic door openers at City Hall and Police Department. Our Comprehensive Plan started with TSW earlier this year and continues its fact finding and community engagement events in the year.

White Oak Park also saw a brand-new playground installation earlier in March. This playground replaced an old/outdated one, with new and inclusive designs and a pour in place.

Public Works Crew

Our Stormwater Department officially started earlier this year, you can see them around town installing culverts, storm drains, repairing collapsed structures, cleaning out ditches with our new Jetter Truck, and even sweeping the streets with our Street Sweeper.

Our Public Works Department is seeing new changes in how we can track work orders and complete them in a timely manner. We strongly encourage our residents to use the Citizen Portal on our City website, this allows us to ensure our residents get the best service in town.

The City Commission declared May 19-25, 2024, as National Public Works Week. During this week Cities across the U.S. celebrate these heroes, how public work professionals contribute to and enhance the quality of life in all the communities they proudly serve.

Upcoming events that Public Works has special effort in making happen are annual Jubilee held on May 4th 10am-4pm at the City Park located at 3817 Redding Rd. Our annual Christmas Festival in December, along with multiple events throughout the summer and fall (Food Truck Friday, Farmers Market, Movie Nights in the park). We encourage all residents to enjoy these free events to you throughout the year.

National Police Week

What is National Police Week?

National Police Week occurs every May, and in 2024, we will commemorate it with live, in-person events. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund will hold ceremonies, including the 36th Annual Candlelight Vigil, to honor the fallen officers whose names have recently been added to the Memorial.

The 36th Annual Candlelight Vigil will be held on Monday, May 13.

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

National Police Week is a collaborative effort of many organizations dedicated to honoring America’s law enforcement community.

Red Bank Police Department Promotes Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Red Bank Police Department is partnering with the Tennessee Highway Safety Office to promote Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. Agencies participate by providing information and increasing awareness in their communities about the importance of sharing the road and looking twice for motorcyclists.

"May is motorcycle awareness month and as summer approaches and the weather grows warmer, more motorcyclists will be traveling the roadways. Motorists need to know how to anticipate and respond to motorcyclists to avoid crashes. Keep in mind that motorcycles have a narrower profile than automobiles and can be very difficult to see, so stay alert. It can be difficult for a driver in a car to accurately judge the speed of an approaching motorcycle.," said Sgt. Rusty Aalberg.

Sgt. Aalberg said, “In 2023 there were 194 crashes involving a motorcycle in Hamilton County. Through March of 2024, there have been 41 motorcycle-involved crashes in Hamilton County.

Here are a few safe driving tips to prevent crashing with a motorcycle:

  • Though a motorcycle is a small vehicle, its operator still has all the rights of the road as any other motorist. Always allow the motorcycle the full width of a lane.
  • Always signal when changing lanes or merging with traffic.
  • If you see a motorcycle with a signal on, be careful. Motorcycle signals are often non-canceling. Always ensure that the motorcycle is turning before proceeding.
  • Check all mirrors and blind spots for motorcycles before changing lanes or merging with traffic, especially at intersections.
  • Always allow ample follow distance - three to four seconds - when driving behind a motorcycle. This gives riders more time to maneuver or stop in an emergency.

Red Bank Fire Department Safety Tips:

Clothes Dryer Safety.

Doing laundry is most likely part of your everyday routine. But did you know how important taking care of your clothes dryer is to the safety of your home? With these few simple safety tips, you can help prevent a clothes dryer fire.

Do not use the dryer without the lint filter.

  •  A dryer without its lint trap is an accident waiting to happen. The filter protects the dryer’s inner workings from collecting lint. Lint buildup in the ducts can easily lead to a dryer vent fire without this defensive shield. Always use the dryer with the lint trap in place to lower your risk. If your existing lint trap is worn or develops any holes, replace it Immediately.

Make sure you clean the lint filter before and after each load of laundry.

Rigid or flexible metal venting material should be used to sustain proper air flow and drying time.

Inspect the duct regularly.

  • Blocked ducts frequently cause dryer fires. To ensure your dryer is running correctly, check your ducts about once a month to ensure there are no blockages. Some telltale signs that your ducts are clogged include the following indicators.
  • Your laundry is taking longer to dry.
  • Exhaust air is failing to exit the vent.

Keep dryers in good working order. Gas dryers should be inspected by a qualified professional to make sure that the gas line and connections are intact and free of leaks.

Make sure the right plug and outlet are used and the machine is connected properly.

Follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions and don’t overload your dryer.

  • Stuffing too many wet clothes or bedding into a dryer can cause an excess of lint to accumulate. Since lint buildup reduces a dryer’s ability to ventilate, the machine may quickly overheat and cause a fire to break out.

Turn the dryer off if you leave home or when you go to bed.

  • Never go to sleep or leave your home while your dryer is running. If a fire breaks out, your ability to extinguish it or call 911 right away can make all the difference between damage to your laundry room and the entire loss of your home.

We hope these safety tips will help protect yourself, your family, and your home from fire damage.
